A lunar eclipse might be just a scientific phenomenon where lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, creating a shadow that falls on the Moon's surface. This happens only during a full moon when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned in a straight line, with the Earth in the middle. However, in Cambodian society, lunar eclipses engrave a deep meaning as we can see in some of the carved images of solar eclipses in some Khmer temples like Angkor Wat temple.

Cambodia is a country that is enriched with culture, legend, and mythologies. So lunar eclipse is a concept that has been introduced previously in Cambodia. The term Lunar eclipse in Khmer is called “Chan Kreas” or “ Rahu Chab Chan” where Rahu represents the eclipse and Chan represents the moon. In Khmer culture, lunar eclipses have traditionally been associated with various cultural beliefs and interpretations. While specific meanings may vary among different communities and individuals. For instance, some believe it to be a symbol of transformation the visual spectacle of a lunar eclipse, where the Moon temporarily disappears or changes color, can symbolize transformation, renewal, or change. In Khmer culture, this symbolism may be associated with personal growth, spiritual evolution, or societal shifts. There's a more important meaning to the term “ Rahu Chab Chan” that some of us still have no idea about and deserve to know it.
The idea of a solar eclipse has always interested me as also I came across an article from Voice of Khmer Krom-VOKK which was written by Thạch Prey Chea Koeun about The Lunar Eclipse. Lunar eclipse or "Rahu Chab Chan" is considered the national symbol of Khmer Krom all over the world as representing the unity born of mutual love, like the brothers of the Khmer Krom people around The world. Rahu, the representative of the Khmer Krom abroad, and Chan, the representative of the Khmer Krom in the country, were separated and occasionally met and hugged and reunited together until they wanted to swallow and so on. In other meanings “Rahu Chab Chan” image has been highlighted as "Mighty and Great" just like Cambodian people.
So in honor of celebrating the National Cultural Day on March 3 that has just happened recently, I want to share this piece of knowledge with everyone who also values this amazing Cambodia's precious heritage. I believe that by actively engaging with and preserving Khmer cultural traditions associated with lunar eclipses, we can help uphold the richness and diversity of Cambodia's cultural heritage for generations to come.
